Travel

Travel directories

The most commercially developed corner of the web, dominated by companies with budgets you cannot match. Which is fine, because the gap they leave is enormous and specific.

  • Dominated incumbents
  • Strong affiliates
  • Wins on specificity

What a listing has to carry

The winning fields in travel are the ones the big platforms cannot be bothered to collect.

  • Typeenum
  • Regionstring
  • Accessible formultiEnum
  • Typical nightly pricenumber
  • Booking pageurl

Where the difficulty sits

Do not compete on inventory
You cannot list more hotels than the platforms, and you should not try. You can be the only place that records whether the bathroom has a step, or whether the trail is doable with a pushchair.
Affiliate rates are good and the cookies are short
Travel affiliate programmes pay well, but attribution windows are often days rather than weeks. That pushes you towards content that catches people close to booking rather than dreaming.
Seasonality is severe
Traffic swings by a factor of five across the year in most travel niches. Budget your effort against the calendar rather than assuming a flat month.

How to start this one

  1. Start from a constraint, not a place

Travelling with a wheelchair, without flying, with a large dog, on a strict budget. A constraint gives you fields the incumbents do not have and an audience that is loyal because nobody else serves it.

  2. Record the thing that is hard to verify remotely

Whatever requires a phone call or a visit to confirm is exactly what nobody else will collect. That is your moat, and it is the part worth automating first.

  3. Write for the booking moment

Inspiration traffic converts badly. Comparison pages for people who have already decided where they are going convert well.
